| Dante and I drove down to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. The rain made the drive intense, but Dante's a good driver, so we made it in fine shape and superb time.
We felt pretty weirded out walking around downtown. An unusual vibe was floating around, but once we hit up the school, we felt right at home.
I ran into Micah who is easily my biggest fan between L.A. and S.F. I say this only because the dude seems to have some of my stuff memorized that I don't. That, and he's just really swell. He's a bio major. Great guy.
The show, held monthly on campus at Cal Poly, is called Another Type of Groove. They had these wonderful red shirts made up that say "word." on the front, and Another Type of Groove on the back. Adam, who booked me, gave me one. They're rad.
The show started out with an open mic and a ton of students signed up. They were awesome! Then I did a 40 minute set that seemed to go over very well. I did most of my favorite poems, but I also did a lot more "stand up" in between. The crowd laughed a lot.
Then there was a break, then another open mic chock full of awesome, then I did another 50 minute set. This was my favorite set of the night I think because the audience was already so used to my work by then, I was able to feed off of the room so much easier. I was very pleased with how it all turned out.
The kids I met during and after the show were incredible. Jen, Kristina, Ruthie, Sarah (who I met before at her high school and at a youth slam at the Milpitas Library), Angela, Corey, Tommy, and so many others. Jen, Jeremy and Micah took Dante and I out for Denny's. We intended to drive back last night, but the rain returned full force and and so Jen offered up two couches at her lovely house. We said good night to the guys, and headed to her place, leaving ugly driving conditions for daylight.
Dante and I headed out of town around 6:30am. It was good drive. We listened to Biggie and Common all the way back. Dante's a great friend. One of the best. I wish he'd get an LJ account... --------- Word to the nerd. |
